We met with Vera George Mousa Baboun, the first woman to be mayor of Bethlehem.  A Palestinian Christian, Mayor Vera shared with us that Bethlehem is a city of peace yet a city divided by walls and check points.

“We are a strangulated city, with no room for expansion due to the settlements and the wall,” she says.

Bethlehem has the highest unemployment in the West Bank, and a changing demographic due to the outflow of Christians from the city. The obstacles, she says are the walls, restricting not only movement but also ideas and goods.

“The real crisis or my fear is when the abnormal living that we live today is to be considered as normal,” she said.

Vera will remain on the national and international stage as an advocate for peace and for the unity of women.
