Knesset Member Aida Touma-Sliman serves as the chair of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality. An Israeli Arab, Touma-Sliman told Center for Women & Democracy delegates that chairing the committee on women allows her to take up issues affecting all areas of life, family life, business life, political life. “I am not working for women’s rights, I am working to change the world, to change the balance of power,” Touma-Sliman said. “I am a Palestinian and the first to chair a statutory committee in of the Knesset. I have to start somewhere to think about a different way of sharing the power, the feminist way of how to share power.”

We met with Touma-Sliman at the Sindyanna of Galilee Visitors Center, which doubles as a studio where Arab women of Cana gather to share and learn traditional weaving. For more information visit, www.sindyana.com.
