What is CAMP GLOW?

The first Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) was in 2006 in Azrou, Morocco with approximately 60 participants, 50 in 2007 in Immouzzer near Sefrou, and 40 in 2008 in Ben Slimane near Rabat.  The majority of the camp participants come from small villages where sometimes secondary school is unavailable.  Some girls have been unable to continue school due to a lack of resources within the family; consequently, without an education or a vocational activity, their only assurance of a promising future is to marry young.

The curriculum of the camp focuses on empowering young girls through discussion about gender roles and societal norms and by listening to women who have broken the cycle of dependency by undertaking a new business venture, attaining a university degree despite a myriad of obstacles, or rising to the top of athletics despite repeated injuries and family obligations.  Camp GLOW, short for Girls Leading Our World, emphasizes introspection.  The girls are encouraged to discuss and debate topics and then are asked to do varying activities that allow the girls to explore their unique perspective and personality.

The National Democratic Institute of Morocco has actively worked to strengthen democratic institutions in Morocco since 1997. The Institute implements programs in the country which aim to reinforce civic engagement in the political process, increase the responsiveness of political parties to citizen needs, strengthen representative institutions such as the parliament and promote the expanded political participation of women and youth.

The People’s Mirror Strategic Research Center, established by NDI in 2003, provides decision makers with meaningful qualitative data through focus groups and in-depth interviews on Moroccans’ priorities, and to help those decision makers enhance their linkages with the citizenry.

Recently, NDI organized a 52-member international election delegation, the first ever in Morocco, to assess the conduct and management of the September 2007 legislative elections. The delegation issued a final report which featured recommendations for improving electoral processes and advancing long-term democratic reforms.
